The Three Items Every Visitor Needs
Travel to Bhutan requires visa clearance, a licensed guide arrangement, and payment of the Sustainable Development Fee. The SDF stands at 100 dollars per person per night in 2026 for most nationalities. Children aged 6 to 12 pay half at 50 dollars per night. Children under 6 are exempt. The fee is separate from hotels, transport, and guiding, and it funds schools, health services, and trail maintenance.
Visa clearance is processed online before travel through your operator. You do not apply at an embassy or on arrival without prior clearance. The clearance letter is checked at check-in for your flight to Paro and at immigration on arrival. Regional visitors from India follow a separate permit system with a lower daily levy and different entry points at Phuentsholing, Gelephu, and Samdrup Jongkhar.
What Your Operator Handles
A licensed Bhutan operator files the clearance, assigns the guide, books the transport, and carries route permits during the trip. Independent travel without a guide is not permitted for most nationalities. Your passport needs 6 months validity beyond travel dates and one blank page. Keep a color scan ready at 300 dpi or higher, since blurry scans cause most processing delays.
Application Timeline
Start 6 to 8 weeks before travel in normal season and 12 weeks before festival weeks in March, April, September, and October. Each step depends on the previous one, so late documents shift the whole chain.
- Step 1, confirm dates and hotels. Send passport scans, arrival and departure dates, and hotel preferences. We hold provisional hotel rooms while paperwork runs. This takes 10 minutes of your time and one working day on our side.
- Step 2, SDF and visa fee deposit. The visa application fee is 40 dollars per person for single entry. We invoice the SDF for your full night count plus the visa fee. For six nights, two adults pay 1,200 dollars SDF plus 80 dollars visa fees. Payment is by card or transfer to the operator account.
- Step 3, operator submits clearance, 5 to 7 working days. We file your details, itinerary, and guide assignment through the national portal. Clearance letters are usually issued within a week outside festival peaks. Festival periods add 3 to 5 days.
- Step 4, clearance letter and flight booking. Once issued, we send the clearance PDF with your clearance number. Book or confirm Paro flights only after this point. Airlines check the letter at boarding in Kathmandu, Delhi, Bangkok, or Singapore.
- Step 5, arrival and immigration, 30 to 60 minutes. Present passport, clearance copy, and one photo. Officers stamp the visa into the passport and verify the SDF record. Keep the SDF receipt printout for hotel check-ins, since some desks ask to see it.
- Step 6, internal permits during the trip. Your guide carries route permits for dzong entries, valleys beyond Punakha, and restricted areas near borders. Taktsang entry, dzong visits, and eastward travel each need separate listings on the permit. You do not queue for these yourself at any office.
- Step 7, exit and records. Departure stamping takes about 10 minutes at Paro airport. We retain your SDF payment records for one year in case of billing questions. No exit fee applies beyond airline taxes included in the ticket.

What Delays Applications
Name mismatches between passport and flight booking cause the second most common hold after blurry scans. Check middle names and hyphenation before we file. Last-minute date changes after clearance require reissue and a fresh fee in some cases. Send final dates once, then avoid changes inside 14 days of travel.
Land Border Notes
Overland entry via Phuentsholing from India adds a border permit step of 2 to 4 hours on arrival day. The border post closes in the evening, so cross before 4 pm. Our Kathmandu desk briefs overland groups separately on Indian transit visas and road times to Thimphu, about 6 hours from the border.
