Bumthang Valleys: Chhoekhor, Tang, Ura and Chhume

Why Bumthang Needs Its Own Plan

Bumthang is not one valley but four: Chhoekhor, Tang, Ura, and Chhume, spread across 2,600 to 3,100 meters in central Bhutan. Most travelers base in Jakar town in Chhoekhor valley and tour outward by vehicle and short walks. The valleys hold the oldest temples in the country, including Jambay Lhakhang from the 7th century and Kurjey Lhakhang with its rock imprint shrine. Plan three nights minimum, since the journey in takes most of a day.

Access runs by road from Punakha over Pele La pass at 3,390 meters, about 8 hours, or by domestic flight from Paro in 35 minutes when schedules operate. Flights are small aircraft with strict baggage limits of 20 kilograms checked and 5 kilograms cabin. Our studio books flights with one road backup day, since cancellations shift groups to the highway.

Getting There

Road travelers leave Punakha by 7 am, cross Pele La by late morning, and reach Jakar by 4 pm with lunch at Trongsa. The Trongsa Dzong viewpoint stop takes 30 minutes and breaks the longest leg. Flight travelers depart Paro early morning and reach Jakar town by 10 am, gaining a full sightseeing day. Both options pay the same SDF of 100 dollars per night.

Valley-by-Valley Timeline

Run the valleys in this order to keep driving loops short and temple visits in morning light.

  1. Phase 1, arrive Chhoekhor and Jakar town, altitude 2,800 meters. Settle near Jakar, walk the town market street, and visit the Jakar Dzong exterior in afternoon light. Keep the first afternoon light after the road journey. Overnight in Jakar for all three nights to avoid repacking.
  2. Phase 2, Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang morning, 3 hours. These two temple complexes sit 2 kilometers apart on flat valley floor. Start at 8 am with Jambay, then Kurjey with its three temples and cypress trees. The walking between sites is level and suits all fitness levels. Return to town for lunch.
  3. Phase 3, Tamshing and town crafts afternoon, 3 hours. Visit Tamshing Lhakhang with its old wall paintings, then the Bumthang cheese factory and a local brewery tasting room. Total driving under 20 kilometers. This easy afternoon balances the temple-heavy morning.
  4. Phase 4, Tang valley day section, 5 to 6 hours. Drive 11 kilometers up the Tang road to the Ugyen Choling Palace museum, then walk 45 minutes down to the river hamlets. The road is narrow with passing places. Tang sits higher at 2,900 meters and runs colder, so carry a wind layer even in October.
  5. Phase 5, Ura valley and Phrumseng La direction, 4 to 5 hours. Drive 48 kilometers southeast to Ura village at 3,100 meters, with its clustered stone houses and new temple. Stop at the Ura viewpoint shelter for photos. Turn back at the village unless continuing east with separate permits, since the road beyond climbs toward the eastern districts.
  6. Phase 6, Chhume valley and weaving centers, 3 hours. On the exit or entry leg, stop at Zugney village for yathra weaving demonstrations and the Tharpaling road turnoff. Chhume sits at 2,700 meters with wide fields. Purchases of yathra textiles support the local cooperative directly.
  7. Phase 7, depart by road or air. Road exit to Punakha takes 8 hours, so depart by 7 am. Flight exit needs check-in 90 minutes before departure at Bathpalathang airport, 15 minutes from Jakar. Confirm the flight the evening before, since morning fog delays are common in December and January.

Meals and Evenings in Jakar

Jakar town has the widest food choice in central Bhutan, with hotel dining rooms, small cafes, and a weekend market selling apples, cheese, and honey. Dinners start early and kitchens close by 8 pm. Evenings are quiet, so bring a book and charge batteries overnight. Hot water runs on solar and hydropower mix, strongest in late afternoon.

Season Notes

October and November bring clear skies and the Jambay festival crowds. December to February nights fall to minus 5 degrees, and some farm stays close water pipes at night. March to May offers orchard blossom and moderate cold. Monsoon from June to August keeps valleys green but adds road slide delays of 1 to 2 hours.
