Why Pair Them
Nepal and Bhutan share the Himalaya but differ in travel style. Nepal allows independent movement, many hotel tiers, and easy extensions to Pokhara or Chitwan. Bhutan runs on licensed guiding with the 100 dollar SDF per night and fixed routing. Pairing them in 14 days givesIndependent lowland and hill time first, then structured valley time in Bhutan. Most travelers start in Nepal and finish in Bhutan, since Paro departures connect cleanly homeward.
Total SDF applies only to Bhutan nights. Six nights in Bhutan means 600 dollars per person SDF plus 40 dollars visa fee. Nepal visas are issued on arrival for most nationalities at 30 dollars for 15 days. Kathmandu to Paro flights run 60 to 90 minutes and operate daily in season, with morning departures.
Visa and Flight Order
Book the Kathmandu to Paro flight only after Bhutan clearance is issued, usually 2 to 3 weeks before travel. Nepal visa is handled on arrival with a form and photo. Baggage on the Paro sector is limited to 20 kilograms checked on smaller aircraft, so pack trek gear inside that limit or leave a bag at the Kathmandu hotel.
14-Day Timeline
This split gives 6 nights Nepal, 6 nights Bhutan, and 2 buffer and transit nights that absorb the main delay risks.
- Days 1 to 2, arrive Kathmandu at 1,400 meters. Rest, visit Durbar Square and Swayambhunath stupa with a city guide. Overnight in Thamel or Boudha. Use day two for permits, gear checks, and a briefing at our Kathmandu desk for the Bhutan leg.
- Days 3 to 4, Pokhara or Bhaktapur extension. Pokhara offers lake views and short ridge walks at 800 to 1,600 meters with 25 minute flights each way. Bhaktapur offers temple squares 45 minutes by road with no flights. Pick Pokhara for mountain air, Bhaktapur for culture with less transit.
- Day 5, buffer and fly preparation. Keep this day open in Kathmandu for delayed mountain flights or extra sightseeing at Patan. Repack to Bhutan baggage limits. Confirm Paro flight seats and Bhutan clearance printouts at the desk.
- Day 6, fly Kathmandu to Paro, drive to Thimphu. Morning flight of 60 to 90 minutes with Himalayan views from the left side. Clear Bhutan immigration in 30 to 60 minutes. Drive 55 kilometers to Thimphu in 90 minutes. Afternoon memorial chorten and viewpoint only.
- Day 7, Thimphu full day. Museums, paper factory, Takin Preserve, and market at 2,334 meters. This easy day absorbs any Paro flight delay effects and resets sleep before the pass crossing.
- Day 8, Thimphu to Punakha over Dochula. Drive 77 kilometers in 3 hours with a 30 minute pass stop at 3,100 meters. Afternoon Punakha Dzong at 1,200 meters and the suspension bridge walk. Warm valley night.
- Day 9, Punakha to Paro, 130 kilometers in 4 hours. Morning Chimi Lhakhang walk across paddies, then midday drive. Afternoon Paro museum and town. Early night before the hike day.
- Day 10, Taktsang hike. Standard 5 to 6 hour round trip to 3,120 meters with cafeteria stop at 2,940 meters. Keep day eleven free of long drives for recovery.
- Days 11 to 12, Paro buffer and Kyichu loop. Morning farmhouse and temple visits, afternoon packing and SDF record checks. Day twelve holds the return flight to Kathmandu or onward via Delhi or Bangkok. Keep one spare night before intercontinental connections.
- Days 13 to 14, Kathmandu close and depart. Souvenir markets, hotel day room, and international departure. Total trip door to door runs 14 to 15 days with origin flights.
Cost Shape
| Leg | Daily cost per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nepal mid-range | 80-150 USD | Hotels, guide, transport |
| Bhutan mid-range | 250-350 USD | Plus 100 USD SDF per night |
| Regional flights | 200-350 USD each | Kathmandu-Paro sector |
Common Mistakes
The main error is tight Paro connections under 24 hours, since mountain weather delays the Kathmandu to Paro sector. Keep two nights flexible around that flight. The second error is stacking a Nepal trek and a Bhutan trek in one trip, which exhausts most walkers. Pair one trek with one culture leg, not two treks.
