The Two Markets
Bhutan hotels divide into international luxury lodges at 800 to 1,500 dollars per room per night and Bhutanese mid-range hotels at 120 to 300 dollars per room per night. Both serve the same valleys, use the same guides and drivers, and pay the same SDF of 100 dollars per person per night on top. The difference sits in room size, staff ratios, spa facilities, and food range, not in access to dzongs or trails.
Luxury lodges operate multi-valley circuits with the same staff style across Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Bumthang. Mid-range hotels are independent per valley, with character varying house by house. Our studio books both and mixes them in one trip when budgets need a midpoint, for example three lodge nights plus three hotel nights.
What the Money Buys
Luxury rooms run 40 to 70 square meters with valley views, deep tubs, heated floors, and 24 hour room service. Mid-range rooms run 20 to 30 square meters with standard heating, hot showers, and restaurant dining hours of 7 to 9 pm. Heating matters most in winter, when luxury insulation shows its value. Food range matters most for restricted diets, where lodge kitchens adapt faster.
Decision Timeline
Work through these phases in order to land on the right tier without overspending.
- Phase 1, set the nightly room budget. Take total trip funds, subtract SDF at 100 dollars per person per night, guide and transport at 150 to 250 dollars per day per group, and domestic flights if any. The remainder divided by nights is the room budget. Most couples land at 150 to 250 dollars per night for mid-range or 900 plus for luxury.
- Phase 2, mark winter or diet needs. December to February travel and strict dietary needs push toward luxury or the best mid-range houses with proven kitchens. April and October travel with standard diets runs well in mid-range. Tell your planner about heating needs and allergies before we shortlist.
- Phase 3, compare Paro and Thimphu options. These valleys hold the deepest stock in both tiers. Luxury lodges here offer full spas and tasting menus. Mid-range hotels here offer the best value in the country, with solid rooms near town centers at 150 to 220 dollars.
- Phase 4, compare Punakha and Phobjikha options. Warm Punakha suits mid-range lodges with riverside terraces at 180 to 280 dollars. Cold Phobjikha suits houses with proven stove heating, where we inspect winter performance yearly. Luxury valley lodges here justify rates mainly in peak crane and festival weeks.
- Phase 5, decide on a mix or a single tier. A common mix is luxury in the coldest valley and mid-range elsewhere, which trims 30 percent off an all-luxury bill. Single-tier trips suit travelers who value routine, since room standards stay constant. Mixed trips suit travelers who value local character with selective comfort.
- Phase 6, lock festival and autumn dates early. Luxury circuits sell out 6 to 9 months ahead for October. Good mid-range rooms sell out 4 to 5 months ahead for the same weeks. Winter and summer hold availability at 6 to 8 weeks with occasional upgrades.

Food and Spa Hours
Luxury lodges serve lunch and dinner across wide hours with wide hours with menus that adapt to allergies and children. Mid-range hotels serve set hours, usually lunch 12 to 2 pm and dinner 6:30 to 8:30 pm, with packed lunches for road days. Spa and bath facilities at luxury lodges run all day with bookings. Mid-range hotels offer hot stone baths by prior order, with 2 hours heating time. Confirm bath and diet notes one week before arrival in both tiers.
Service Differences That Matter
Luxury lodges include guided valley walks, laundry, and spa credits in some rates. Mid-range hotels charge these separately at modest prices. Guiding quality does not follow the hotel tier, since our studio assigns the same guide pool across tiers. Transport is identical, usually a mid-size SUV for two travelers or a van for four plus.
